If you drive over the Berkeley Hills, six miles down the winding San Pablo Dam Road, you'll see a faded green sign peeking out from a handful of oak trees. It reads: “Welcome to El Sobrante.” El Sobrante is an unincorporated area that is located in the northeast section of Contra Costa County with a diverse population of approximately 13,000. The greater El Sobrante Valley includes portions that are within the city of Richmond.

Living in El Sobrante offers residents a suburban feel, surrounded by rolling hills, with most residents owning their homes. There are quite a few parks, but not too many larger shops or restaurants, and no town square. The town recently upgraded the high school, which has become a larger draw for families moving there. Locals love the access to Wildcat Canyon for hiking trails. For those looking for a small town vibe, El Sobrante may be a good option.

As far as places to visit, Maria’s Gourmet Pastries on San Pablo Dam Road is known for its Tres Leches cakes among other delights, Oliver’s Hardware has been around since the 1940’s (adding to that small town feel), and for most people familiar with El Sobrante, Thrift Town is the destination of choice. The warehouse-sized shop has everything from furniture to t-shirts to artwork. Treasure hunters abound at this East Bay “best kept secret.”

It’s hard not to miss the Sikh temple that overlooks El Sobrante from up in the hills. The golden domes of the Gurdwara Sahib are located at 3550 Hillcrest Road, and are noticeable from most areas. As one of the first Sikh temples in the Bay Area, built in 1979, it’s sometimes considered the Sikh Center of the Bay. Visitors are always welcome to come see the views, or for prayer and community events.

It’s also not uncommon to see people horseback riding in El Sobrante, as there are many small farms that make up the area. Cloverfield Organic Farm is located there, nestled among the Eucalyptus and Bay trees. A friendly spot to find fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables that you can pick yourself.
